In a "land-based" business or store, a client can open their wallet and give you cash, a check or a credit card and walk away with their purchase.

On the Internet, you and your customers exist in Cyber-Space. Their visit to your "store" took no effort other than clicking on a mouse. Going to a competitor's store won't cost them a penny or take more time than another mouse click.

To keep them from clicking away to your competition, we know that your e-Commerce store or online office has to look great - hey, that's why you're here, to get a wonderful Web Site design - and it has to offer great content.

A customer buying from you IS the "Bottom Line!"

You've achieved all the necessary requirements to get the customer interested. NOW he or she has to buy something from you to make it all worthwhile! The only question is, how can you make it EASY for them to BUY?

You MUST accept credit cards. Period. You MUST.

A lengthy discussion of the merits inherent in accepting credit cards for purchases is silly. Logic dictates that few customers are going to visit your site and be so interested that they will take the time to sit down, write you a letter, and mail you a check or money order.

The only issue left is HOW you get your eCommerce business and web site ready to accept credit cards for purchases...

There are two basic options:
  1. You can get a Merchant Account for your business...

  2. OR, you can sign up with one of the rapidly growing segment of Internet merchants who will process your credit card transactions through their account...

AND...

In case you get a customer who wants to pay by check, and, in case you want to accept checks (this method sometimes brings more problems to a merchant than solutions), you can now do it ELECTRONICALLY.

You will need to get software for printing a hard copy check, or add this option to your Merchant Account...

Getting a Merchant Account:

Basically, the Merchant Account is provided through a credit card processing company or through your bank.

The credit card processing company sets your business up with the software, equipment and tools necessary to accept credit cards. When a customer purchases an item using their credit card, the processing company handles charging the customer's credit card account, processing the funds from their account through the system. After the funds have been processed (36 to 48 hours), the money gained from that transaction (less a small fee) is deposited into your bank account!

You pay the credit card processor a monthly fee for the software, hardware, etc. In addition, you will pay them a small percentage (around 2.40%) of each transaction.

...over 99% of all applications for a Merchant Account are approved!

A LOT of people have credit problems. And most of the people with credit problems are afraid to apply for ANYTHING - the rejection can be humiliating. Take heart and read on if you are one of those people...

It used to be that anyone wanting to get a Merchant Account had to have good credit and an established "storefront" or office. Few Mail Order or other "arms' length" companies were ever accepted or approved...

As always, the Internet has caused MAJOR changes in the "establishment rules" - although it is still tougher to get a bank officer to approve anyone whose profile is not great, or is selling on the WWW.
